Subgenre

Subgenre (also sub-genre) is a variant of genre which emphasizes its position as a child? of another genre, its parent?(s). For example, rock is a genre (and would hardly if ever be described as a subgenre) while punk rock and roots rock are clearly subgenres of rock, and may occasionally simply be described as subgenres (e.g. "punk rock is a subgenre defined by its aggression").

A particularly niche subgenre with minimal social penetration or few participating artists will be called a microgenre, a related term that further emphasizes its obscurity or the narrowness of its scope.
