R&B, short for rhythm & blues ? and also typeset R'n'B, is a broad genre or umbrella category of popular music which encompasses a lineage of African-American ? styles emerging in the wake of and influenced by gospel ?, blues ?, and jazz ?.

The "rhythm & blues" term originated with Billboard magazine in the mid-1940s, replacing the earlier term "race records ?" that had been in use by record labels since the 1920s ?. Early rhythm & blues records typically existed somewhere between the more rhythmic side of electric blues ? and the small-band swing ? adaptation of jump blues ?, as well as the strands of gospel which combined with this R&B foundation to create an early form of soul ?.
