R&B
R&B, short for rhythm & blues? and also typeset R'n'B, is a broad genre or umbrella category of popular music which encompasses a lineage of African-American? styles emerging in the wake of and influenced by gospel?, blues?, and jazz?.
The "rhythm & blues" term originated with Billboard magazine in the mid-1940s, replacing the earlier term "race records?" that had been in use by record labels since the 1920s?. Early rhythm & blues records typically existed somewhere between the more rhythmic side of electric blues? and the small-band swing? adaptation of jump blues?, as well as the strands of gospel which combined with this R&B foundation to create an early form of soul?.
