Pop

Pop is a very broad genre of music which is largely defined by its generally pleasant, accessible, and often catchy melodies combined with more conventional structures and songwriting, and a vocal lead. As with all categories, none of these elements is entirely obligatory, but they are an attempt at capturing the genre's tricky nature as something which the vast majority of people agree exists but which doesn't seem to come from any single lineage, rather being something which is approached from the position of many different traditions.

As a word, "pop" is a shortening of "popular music", and some people will use it that way. [etc]
